Lidar sensor on roof
From 2024, an autonomous taxi will be used in the urban area of Wörgl.
The initiative emerged from a cooperation between the Graz University of Technology and the research center “Virtual Vehicle“. Its goal is to test and optimize autonomous driving. Wörgl will therefore be the first municipality in Tyrol to test autonomous driving.
The autonomous taxi made by Virtual Vehicle Graz, will be on selected routes in Wörgl from next year. Due to the current legal situation Austria There will always be a person present at the driving seat to ensure safety.
The vehicle has six cameras inside and on the body as well as laser sensors on the roof to detect obstacles and calculate the distance to surrounding objects. There are computer units in the trunk for evaluating sensor and camera data. The passenger can use a tablet to select the desired route before the car starts autonomously and automatically detects obstacles in order to stop safely.
