Singapore’s deputy prime minister and finance minister Lawrence Wong has been appointed deputy chairman of GIC while Japan’s SMBC, and global multi-family office WRISE have announced top-level appointments.

Lawrence Wong named deputy chairman of GIC

Singapore’s deputy prime minister and finance minister Lawrence Wong has been appointed deputy chairman of Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, The Business Times reported.

His appointment will be effective from October 1, 2023. Wong has been the director of GIC since 2018 and has also been the chairman of GIC’s Investment Strategies Committee since July this year.

He became the chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in July this year.

Wong has been serving as the central bank’s deputy chairman since June 2021 and was a board member from June 2011 to August 2016.

SMBC hires new head of macro strategy in Asia

Tokyo-headquartered Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) on Tuesday announced the appointment of Jeff Ng as head of Asia macro strategy for its global markets and treasury business.

In a statement, SMBC said Ng will be formulating and disseminating views on Asian macro, currency and rates markets, with a focus on Australia, India, and the ASEAN region.

He will also be responsible for recommending trade ideas and delivering SMBC’s Asia macro strategy to our clients globally.

Jeff joins SMBC with over 14 years of experience including roles at Deutsche Bank and Standard Chartered where he covered global markets as a strategist.

WRISE Group appoints group COO

Global multi-family office WRISE Group on Tuesday announced the appointments of Helen Lam as group chief operating officer (COO), and Gaven Koh as group head of risk and compliance.

In a statement, the Singapore-based group said that Lam will ensure oversight of its governance and operations, while Koh will manage all compliance-related requirements of internal and external stakeholders. Both the executives will report to chairman Derrick Tan.

Lam brings over 20 years of experience in the wealth management industry. Prior to WRISE, Lam spearheaded strategic business operations at the Bank of Singapore Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Koh, who has over 12 years of experience in the private banking industry, led a team at Credit Suisse AG of 30 compliance analysts across Asia Pacific before joining WRISE.
