Indonesia’s Gojek launches GoRide Transit for multimodal travel

Southeast Asian mobile on-demand multi-service platform Gojek has announced the official launch of GoRide Transit, its latest offering for multimodal travel.

GoRide Transit allows riders to book multimodal trips integrated with public transport in a single transaction, according to the announcement. It was rolled out early this month and officially launched on Friday.

Gojek said GoRide Transit comprises a GoRide to the train station, a trip on the KRL Commuterline, and a GoRide from the train station to rider’s final destination.

“GoRide Transit is a key part of our strategy to grow our total addressable market by expanding our reach to a wider segment of consumers, particularly those who prioritise value,” said GoTo Group CEO Patrick Walujo.

Walujo added that the launch of GoRide Transit supports the Indonesian government’s efforts to increase public transport ridership in Indonesia and reduce the country’s carbon emissions.

A study conducted by PUSTRAL UGM showed that Gojek’s multimodal trip planner solution launched in July last year increased public interest in using public transportation.

According to the study, there was a 38.3% increase in Commuterline usage by Gojek users compared to their travel patterns before using the solution.

“The launch of GoRide Transit highlights our position as a pioneer in multimodal mobility solutions and is part of our ongoing efforts to provide services that will add value and convenience to the lives of our users,” said Catherine Sutjahyo, president of On-Demand Services at GoTo Group.

Gojek was first established in 2010, focusing on courier and motorcycle ride-hailing services, before launching its app in January 2015 in Indonesia. Since then, it has grown to become the leading on-demand platform in Indonesia, with additional operations in Vietnam and Singapore.

Its parent company, GoTo, narrowed its net loss by 47.5% year-on-year in the six months ended June 30, 2023, showing progress in meeting its target of clocking positive adjusted EBITDA this year.

GoTo said last month that its losses for the first half of 2023 stood at 7.2 trillion rupiah ($466.6 million), compared with 14.2 trillion rupiah in the same period of 2022. GoTo’s losses for the April-June period (Q2 2023) came in at 3.3 trillion rupiah, down 56.1% compared with the same period a year earlier.
