The BMW Group has revealed the iX2, an all-new electric variant of its X2 SUV.
In addition to its EV-centric capabilities, including its enhanced performance, battery, and driving range, the iX2 also offers customers a technology-centric interior through its standard inclusion of the latest version of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, and BMW Operating System 9. BMW confirmed that the EV will launch in March 2024, after entering production at its plant in Regensburg, Germany, as the iX2 xDrive 30 alongside its ICE performance counterpart, the BMW X2 M35i xDrive. Following this initial launch, the BMW Group will roll out an additional electric model to accompany the iX2 xDrive 30 in summer 2024.
At launch, the iX2 will be equipped with two highly integrated drive units, with one located at the front axle and the other at the rear. Together, these units will generate a power output of 313 hp (230 kW) with 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. The setup also enables the EV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h). Supporting the iX2’s estimated electric driving range of 259 to 279 miles (417 to 449 kilometers) is its battery, which provides 64.8 kWh of usable energy. The EV also offers adaptive recuperation capabilities and a Max Range function to support its range figures, equipped with the latest version of BMW’s Max Performance charging software to optimize efficiency while the car is being charged.
Inside, the latest version of BMW’s iDrive display and control/operation system featuring the OEM’s QuickSelect technology and Maps navigation system are all featured as standard equipment and form the base of its infotainment offering. Based on BMW Operating System 9, this offering also includes the OEM’s Curved Display and Intelligent Personal Assistant – allowing users to control much of the iX2’s functionality through the touchscreen or using natural language voice commands.
The infotainment operating system itself facilitates the introduction of further digital apps and services from BMW. Here, the premium BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades package offers users the chance to experience a complimentary one-month trial of select vehicle functions. At the end of this period, the user can then add these functions to the EV and use for a specific period of time.
In a similar fashion, the new subscription-based BMW Digital Premium offering will provide users with access to a broad range of digital in-vehicle apps and services. Upon activation, the subscription enables users to access all the apps that are available in their country across several categories – including music streaming, video streaming, news, in-vehicle gaming, and more. The subscription fee also covers data usage for the digital services and apps downloaded from BMW’s ConnectedDrive Store.
Further along the interior is the instrument panel which houses the iX2’s curved display and sits alongside a floating arm rest that offers an integral control panel. At the front of the center console is a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and inductive wireless charging capabilities, while four USB-C ports and a 12-V power socket can be found in both the EV’s center console and the boot. Accompanying these convenience features are BMW Digital Key Plus, BMW ID functionality, and integrations with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – all of which are available for the new iX2.
