The Joint Action Committee comprising different business and residents’ associations has given an ultimatum of three days to the UT administration on relaxing the non-EV capping, warning if their demands were not met, “people, including the mayor, will sit on the border of the city in black clothes”.
A spokesperson for the committee said, “This Sunday is the first Navaratra, but the EV policy of the Chandigarh administration remains the same. Two-wheeler traders had hoped the administration will give relief in the capping imposed on fuel motorcycles and scooters. But it has paid no attention to the public demand. People are eager to buy vehicles during the holy Navaratras, but the stubbornness of the administration has ruined their dreams.”
In June, 18 associations of Chandigarh had come together and warned the administration in the presence of mayor Anup Gupta that if their demands were not met, they would not allow vehicles from other states to enter the city.
“The administration wants the entire city to celebrate a black festival, but today, we give an ultimatum to the administration that if in the next three days, it does not remove the capping on sale of petrol two-wheelers, all traders and public will wear black clothes and sit on dharna at the city borders and not allow any two-wheeler from other states to enter Chandigarh,” said the spokesperson.
The Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) stopped the registration of the non-EV two-wheelers on October 6 after the stipulated registration cap set under the EV Policy 2022 was reached.
The registration cap was 12,076, which was reached on October 6, and immediately the registration was stopped.
Earlier, UT adviser Dharam Pal had given the go ahead for stopping the registration of the non-EV vehicles as and when the registration limit was achieved.
As per the RLA officials, the non-EV four-wheelers (cars) registration is also likely to be stopped within a month as only around 1,600 cap limit is left in the category.
