Stellantis and Samsung SDI have announced that StarPlus Energy, their EV battery joint venture, will build its second U.S. gigafactory in Kokomo, Indiana.
The new battery manufacturing facility will represent an investment of more than $3.2 billion (€2.8 billion) from StarPlus Energy, with production expected to commence in early 2027 at an annual capacity of 34 GWh). It is the joint venture’s second gigafactory in Kokomo, with the first currently under construction ahead of its opening before the first quarter of 2025, when it will operate with an annual production capacity of 33 GWh. Together, the total investment for both facilities will be more than $6.3 billion (€5.5 billion).
Leveraging the joint venture, and its new gigafactories, Stellantis will look to accelerate the achievement of its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. Through it, the corporation plans to reach a 100% passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe, and 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States, by 2030. In doing so, Stellantis will look to secure approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity.
