Facing immense pressure to relax or abolish the non-EV registration caps, the UT administration will hold a meeting on the EV policy on Tuesday.
“The administration is under a lot of pressure not only from the different citizen bodies, business associations, and political parties, but also from the top echelons of the administration itself to relax the targets set under the EV policy. Consequently, relaxations are on the cards, though the final decision will be taken after the discussions in the meeting,” a senior UT official said.
The Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) had stopped the registration of the non-EV two-wheelers on October 6 after the stipulated registration cap set under the EV Policy 2022 was reached.
The registration cap was 12,076, which was reached on October 6.
According to the RLA officials, registration of non-EV four-wheelers (cars) is likely to be stopped within a month as its cap limit is just short of 1,500 now.
Earlier in February, the administration had stopped registration. Then in July the original cap for this year was exhausted and registration was about to be stopped, but then administration expanded the capping targets.
Last week, the joint action committee had given an ultimatum of three days to the UT administration on the issue of EV cap relaxations.
