Industries minister Uday Samant on Thursday said CM Eknath Shinde had decided to call the General Motors’ (GM) officials for revising the severance pay of its former employees, agitating at the plant in Maval.

The minister visited the ex-staffers of GM observing a hunger strike from October 2. After the auto major decided to shut its factory, the laid off employees have been demanding higher severance pay and employment in Hyundai Motors — the new owner of the plant.

Samant told reporters, “The CM is personally looking into the issue. He held a meeting with the workers’ delegation and GM officials in his office. He has decided to call the officials again and ask them to rethink the revised severance pay.”

“I have requested the workers to give some more time to the government to find a solution. They have responded positively. The government will request Hyundai to absorb the laid off workers in its factory,” Samant added.
