The 3 Chinese models BYD Seal, XPENG P7 and BYD Dolphin, totally electric, reach the maximum score. Mercedes E-Class and EQE earn a “very good” rating for their motorway driving assistance systems
All three Chinese cars tested by Euro NCAP achieved five-star ratings, particularly in the adult and child protection areas in the event of an accident. European manufacturers are also at the forefront of car technology, while assisted driving continues to evolve rapidly. The two Mercedes-Benzes, E-Class and EQE, were rated “very good” when it comes to highway driving assistance systems.
Euro NCAP, the first organization in the world to develop technical requirements for children, encourages manufacturers to equip vehicles with a child presence detection system (it emits a sound warning when it recognizes that the child has been left in the car).
The update of the Euro NCAP rating for 2023 also includes the evaluation of 2 new tests that monitor the reactions of the vehicle if involved in a heavy storm or a flood: the automatic unlocking of the car doors in a possible submersion and the duration of operation of electric windows.
“Competition between car manufacturers is the driving force behind the success of Euro NCAP – said Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP. No manufacturer can afford to be left behind when it comes to safety, and that’s a motivation for innovation. Technology is evolving faster than ever, and devices such as assisted driving open up new areas of competition. Euro NCAP will ensure that these new technologies are introduced in a way that realizes the full safety benefits.”
Information about Euro NCAP
The Euro NCAP Consortium, of which ACI is a member, organizes crash tests on new vehicles and provides realistic and independent assessments of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. Established in 1997 and supported by several European governments, motoring, consumer and insurance organisations, Euro NCAP has quickly become a catalyst for encouraging significant safety improvements in the design of new cars.
