BP America has announced a deal in which bp pulse, its EV charging business, will acquire ultra-fast charging hardware units from Tesla for $100 million (€94.5 million / £82.4 million). The investment will help the company expand the reach of the bp pulse public network across the US, while enabling support for EV fleet customers by deploying chargers at their private depots.
The roll-out is expected to begin in 2024 at key sites across BP’s brand portfolio, including TravelCenters of America, Thorntons, ampm, and Amoco; bp pulse’s Gigahub charging sites in major metropolitan areas; and at select third-party sites. The first cities where BP-owned Tesla charging units will be installed will in Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C. The chargers will also be deployed at select bp pulse fleet customer depots.
Offering an output of 250 kW, the Tesla ultra-fast chargers will be branded, installed and operated by bp pulse. They will be fitted with the OEM’s Magic Dock, compatible with both NACS and CCS connectors, enabling non-Tesla EVs to use the Tesla chargers on the bp pulse network. Further convenience is provided to users through the Tesla chargers support of the Plug and Charge protocol, which simplifies and automates payments.
