A report by consulting firm Teamlease states that there has been an 81% year-on-year surge in the demand for green jobs in January 2023.
Delhi/NCR saw a year-on-year growth of 289%, whereas Mumbai and Bengaluru saw a year-on-year growth of 216% and 174%.
A significant increase in ESG-related jobs in India over the past three years indicates an increased focus on sustainability in the Indian job market. Job searches for sustainability roles have increased by 31% between April 2022 and 2023, with 13% overall growth in interest in sustainability roles over the last three years.
Esg sector jobs have grown by 223% between April 2019 and April 2023.
The demand for green supply chain managers is projected to grow at 10-15% annually.
Auto industry
The Automobile industry also showed increased demand for green professionals at 307%, the report added. India’s automotive industry’s worth is around $222 billion, while the EV market in India is estimated to be valued at $2 billion by 2023 and $178 billion by 2030.
In the auto industry, Battery and EV component manufacturing offer the most job opportunities, the report states. The predicted 1600% growth in Li-on Battery manufacturing is expected to offer significant job opportunities, it added.
“The e-mobility space is exhibiting a tectonic shift in the technology, which creates a whole new requirement for skill sets and roles. This sector is hiring a large pool of engineers – electrical, electronics and mechanical. Additionally, there is a huge demand for software developers, app developers, chemical engineers, business analysts and designers. The e-mobility space is changing rapidly, and with AI, it is undergoing further transition,” said Yuvraj Sarda, Head- E-mobility solutions, Volvo Construction Equipment.
While there are significant job opportunities on one hand, the report also highlights the skill gap shortage with less than 10% of the population receiving formal training.
In the context of climate change, the lack of a skilled workforce in sustainable development is estimated to lead to an annual GDP loss of 3-10% from 2021 onwards.
“Corporates can play an active role in creating awareness and skill enhancement of the workforce. Moreover, it has to be adapted as a part of the company culture,” said Sundaresan MR, Head of Procurement and Sustainability Programs, Nissan Digital India.
