New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police has prosecuted owners of 2,126 BS III petrol cars and 9,496 BS IV diesel cars for running on the city’s roads after the government enforced the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
The restriction on BS III petrol cars and BS IV diesel light vehicles comes under GRAP Stage III. Delhi, however, is now under GRAP Stage IV, a more stringent and the final stage of the action plan when the AQI exceeds 450. GRAP Stage III was enforced on November 2, and Stage IV three days later.
Traffic police also released challans against 12,869 vehicles for plying without the mandatory pollution under control certificate (PUCC).
“The highest instances of commuters travelling without a valid PUC certificate have occurred in the areas of Vasant Vihar, Tughlak Road and Tilak Nagar,” SS Yadav, special CP, traffic, said. Widespread improper parking was seen in these areas, he said. “Maximum prosecution of commuters driving against traffic flow were noted in Nangloi, Dwarka and Badarpur. Strict action was taken against vehicles entering no-entry zones, with maximum number of violations recorded in Badarpur, Bhajanpura and Chanakyapuri,” the officer said.
Data shows that against the 2,126 BS III petrol vehicles 2,193 challans were issued and nine vehicles were impounded. Of the 9,496 BS IV diesel vehicles facing action, 9,903 challans were made and 33 vehicles were impounded.
The ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi (except for those carrying essentials) led to the prosecution of 197 vehicles, 215 challans and one instance of impounding.
At significant border entries, specialised traffic personnel reroute non-essential goods trucks and non-compliant light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi, according to guidelines of the Government of National Capital Territory (GNCT) of Delhi under GRAP-IV. To enhance the efficiency of traffic movement, signal timings are regularly finetuned to synchronise with the prevailing traffic conditions.
