The state cabinet on Tuesday decided to fully exempt the tax and penalty for those who want to scrap and de-register their vehicles, which are older than 15 years. The decision has been taken as a measure to get rid of old and polluting vehicles.
Earlier, the Union ministry for road transport and highways had issued an advisory to the states and Union Territories to announce one-time waiver of pending liabilities for swift scrapping of the vehicles, which are causing vehicular emission and polluting the environment.
The initiative is aimed at attracting owners of old vehicles to come forward and deregister the old vehicles by scrapping in the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility Centres which is being done scientifically without any pollution.
In view of the fact, the commerce and transport department has decided to announce a one-time waiver or concession in the arrears of MV tax and penalty. The penalty will be exempted along with a portion of the tax according to the age of vehicles, the official statement of the cabinet decision read.
The cabinet decision will result in very old vehicles going off the roads and the defaulting vehicle owners ending up benefited. It must be noted here that the motor vehicle tax and penalty are pending against more than 50,000 vehicle owners.
