The stage is finally set for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 32 sites across the city. The Chandigarh municipal corporation has handed over the sites to the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) of the UT after a field survey and inspection by its engineering department.

The CREST will soon start the exercise in this regard as the tender of the work of installing EV charging stations has already been allotted to a private bidder.

While handing over the sites to the CREST, the civic body has ensured that all these sites are free of technical or physical glitch for the installation of charging stations.

All sites have been cleared after getting a consent from area councillors and market welfare associations.

Sites at the multilevel parking in Sector 17, parking opposite Elante Mall and parking at Manimajra Car Bazaar were the largest where 12 charging guns each will be set up.

“Since technical feasibility and availability of apt space were key components to install 183 charging guns at 32 sites, the technical team of the CREST had accompanied the engineering department officials. Sites were given a go-ahead after CREST team was satisfied. All these sites have been identified in a manner, so that vehicles can easily be parked for charging,” sources said.

The engineering and architecture department of the civic body have also provided detailed drawings of all the earmarked parking sites to the CREST to avoid any ambiguity while installing EV charging stations. Besides physical inspection, the employees and officials have given approvals after going through these drawings.

A high-level committee comprising engineering officials of the Chandigarh municipal corporation, officers of the CREST, municipal councillors, representatives of market and resident welfare associations had also held a meeting a few days back in this regard, and subsequently given their consent to these sites.

No change has been made in the number of sites and charging guns, given by the CREST to the municipal corporation.
