Bangalore University is likely to introduce a battery-operated vehicle for students and teachers in its huge Jnana Bharathi campus.
“We are hoping to get 2-3 such vehicles for students through CSR funds,” said vice-chancellor Jayakar Shetty. The varsity, , which has around 4,000 students, can avail the service for free.
Once inside BU’s 1,100-acre campus, students are forced to walk or rely on their own two-wheelers or BMTC buses to hop from one place to another. A battery-operated vehicle will be of great help to them, especially those who are physically challenged. Additionally, this will reduce the risk while crossing roads, the V-C pointed out.
Other large campuses in the city like Indian Institute of Science already have battery-operated autorickshaws for transit.
“This has been almost a 15-year-old demand from the students’ union. Private vehicles on campus have to be reduced. Students should be informed about the timings of these vehicles,” said Lokesh Ram, president of Bangalore University post-graduate and researchers’ association.
