A new ISBT would be constructed near the airport providing direct connectivity for interstate buses, addressing the current issue of lack of dedicated stands or parking spaces for these buses.
“DIAL has planned an intermodal transport hub at IGI Airport near Aerocity Metro station that shall also include an Airport ISBT as a primary facility to serve long distance interstate passengers along with the upcoming metro station on the Phase 4 line under construction by DMRC,” said DIAL in a letter to the transport department.
“Keeping in view the merits of such an integrated transport hub for efficient intermodal integration the proposed airport ISBT is being planned as a state-of-the-art facility for operating inter-state luxury buses to serve airport passengers,” it added.
After disembarking at the IGI Airport, many travellers proceed to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, or Uttarakhand. Currently, the system is quite disorganized, with a lack of dedicated stands or parking spaces for these buses. This often leads to buses waiting outside the airport or paying substantial fees to park within the airport premises.
Officials said that the permission was yet to be given as the department is examining the proposal. The ISBT and the supporting passenger amenities shall be developed by DIAL either directly or through a nominee or concessionaire in consultation with the department, it added.
The capital cost for the facilities development shall be incurred by DIAL or its concessionaire. The DIAL has sought permission from the transport department to develop and operate the airport ISBT to serve inter-state buses.
A senior official of Delhi government said that the proposed ISBT, located near Aerocity metro station, will serve as a multimodal transport hub integrating bus, metro, and air services.
It aims to enhance facilities for bus travellers and offer free shuttle services between the airport terminals. State-owned buses and private operators will be able to operate from this terminal, with adherence to transport department regulations.
This development aims to improve the overall travel experience for those arriving or departing from the airport. According to the transport department officials, DIAL’s officials have shared basic information about the project through presentations.
