LG Electronics has revealed a transparent antenna for vehicles ahead of its exhibition at CES 2024. The film-type antenna is applied directly to vehicle glass, and was designed in partnership with Saint-Gobain Sekurit, a French glass manufacturer. Through its telecommunications technology, LG expects the solution to deliver a positive impact in the mobility sector, while more broadly strengthening its position in the automotive solutions market.
Designed for compatibility across various types of glass and vehicle designs, LG’s transparent antenna will be available as an on-glass or in-glass solution. The broad surface application of the antenna will help guarantee reliable telecommunications performance, while providing scalability to handle increased network traffic. With a focus on adaptability, the solution offers improved connectivity with support for 5G, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), and Wi-Fi.
The transparent antenna can be integrated in car windshields or on glass sunroofs. For OEMs, this removes the need for the housing typically required to accommodate conventional antennas, meaning that no design concessions will need to be made when developing new models. The antenna also hosts various LG-patented features, including its transparent patterns and transparent electrode technology. In partnership with Saint-Gobain Sekurit, LG looked to enhance the product’s integrity by developing a dedicated method to apply the transparent antenna onto glass. The glass maker is likewise equipping EVs worldwide.
