The transport department registered 25% more vehicles in 2023 than in 2022 — the highest in the last six years. With people opting for environment-friendly vehicles, EV registrations also doubled in 2023.

While vehicle registrations increased to 1,52,073 in 2023 from 1,22,636 in 2022, EV registrations jumped to 12,052 from 6,026. This has pushed up the revenue from vehicles — INR 723 crore against INR 547 crore in 2022, said Siyaram Verma, assistant regional transport officer (ARTO-administration), Noida.

“From January to December 2023, we registered 1.5 lakh new vehicles — 71,938 two-wheelers, 48,245 four-wheelers and 31,890 commercial vehicles. In 2022, the department had registered 1.2 lakh vehicles — 60,632 two-wheelers, 39678 four-wheelers and 22326 commercial vehicles,” he said.

In the category of electric vehicles, the department in 2023 saw a jump in registrations across categories — 1,565 bikes against 1,520 in 2022, 793 cars against 26, 517 e-carts against 299, 7213 e-rickshaws against 4,075, and 1,800 three-wheelers against 49, and 164 three-wheeler goods carriers against 57.

Uttar Pradesh government gives 100% tax exemption on the registration of EVs purchased and registered in the state of Uttar Pradesh from the date of notification of the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, 2022, dated October 14, 2022, to October 13, 2025. The policy aims to encourage faster adoption of EVs.

Abhijeet Sinha, an EV user and resident of Sector 143, said that the EV charging infrastructure is still insufficient. “There are insufficient charging infrastructure in Noida and Greater Noida, and those available in public places often do not function properly. People also can’t travel in EVs outside NCR cities due to the charging problem,” he said.

However, nearly 16,000 e-rickshaws are successfully running in the city because they have a facility for battery swapping. The same is not available for e-cars and e-buses in Noida.
