Having committed billions of dollars in electric vehicle manufacturing including lithium ion batteries manufacturing, Tata Group is on the verge of concluding and announcing a huge “semiconductor” (investment) roadmap in Dholera, Natrajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Group said at the 10th Global Summit of Vibrant Gujarat.
In his address to the gathering which had the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, Chandrasekaran said, “The Tata Group has also made a commitment and it is on the verge of concluding and announcing a huge semiconductor roadmap in Dholera. We are about to complete these negotiations and start in 2024.”
Terming Gujarat the “gate to the future”, Chandrasekaran said, that the steady and spectacular progress of Gujarat consistently for such a long period of time, clearly demonstrates the “visionary leadership and the mindset” of Prime Minister Modi.
“The impact of economic development has also resulted in tremendous social development,” said Chandrasekaran.
To support Tata Motors’ ambitious electric vehicle plans, Tata Group’s 20 GW lithium-ion batteries manufacturing factory will start construction in March.
“Sanand is becoming home to all our electric vehicle technology. We have expanded the footprint with additional capacity so that we can meet the growing demand for electric vehicles. We concluded and are about to launch the building of a huge giga factory for 20GW of lithium-ion batteries in Sanand. The project should start construction in the next couple of months,” he added.
Tata Group committed Rs 13,000 crore investment in setting up of lithium-ion battery manufacturing in the middle of 2023. Tata Group subsidiary Agratas Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government under the new Electronics Policy (2022-28) in this regard.
By setting up a battery manufacturing facility, Tata Group aims to support the country’s transition towards electric mobility and renewable energy. The battery plant is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for over 13,000 individuals.
Tata Motors’ EV arm – Tata Passenger Electric Mobility last year completed the acquisition of Ford India’s Sanand plant last year. The facility at Sanand, Gujarat, acquired from Ford, can produce 300,000 vehicles annually, which can be scaled to 420,000 units over time – thereby creating ample capacity to cater to future electrification needs.
He reminded that august gathering, For the Tata Group – Gujarat is a “very special place”, the Tata Group’s origin started in Navsari – the birthplace of our founder Jamshedji Tata.
The Tata Group started its presence here in 1939 with Tata Chemicals – 85 years ago. Today 21 of our Tata Group have a very strong presence from Tata Power, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy, our Defence company Advanced Systems, Tata Steel and all our retail companies. The group employs about 50,000 people in the state of Gujarat. Recently, we have made a significant commitment to expand our presence in the state.
“We also are building the C295 defence aircraft initially in Vadodara and then in Dholera and that work is going on in full swing,” informed Chandrasekaran.
To support the advanced manufacturing and industries – Tata Group along with the Government of India, state government of Gujarat and Indian Institute of Skills will train 25,000 professionals every year through a new campus spread over 3.2 lakh sq feet in advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, advanced electronics and hospitality. The project’s first phase will be launched in March 2024.
“In all we see Gujarat as a very important destination, not only for business growth but also for the future advanced technology industries that India is looking to grow. With all this Gujarat is one of the most important destinations for the group and we are going to play a very important role in the future of the economic development of this state,” added Chandrasekaran.
