Ford’s European arm has revealed the 2024 Kuga, its latest SUV that will be offered to customers in PHEV and hybrid models from late January. The line-up also includes a new Active series, targeting drivers looking for a more rugged model capable of off-road driving on surfaces including sand or mud.
Built in Europe and designed for its European customers, the PHEV Kuga range offers up to 39 miles (69 km) of electric driving range, while the AWD full hybrid version offers up to 559 miles (900 km) of range on a single tank of fuel with up to 64% pure-electric driving in cities. Together, both models offer enhanced acceleration, reduced carbon emissions, and up to 4,629 lb (2,100 kg) of towing ability.
Inside, the new Kuga features Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, which the OEM says offers twice the computing power compared to its previous generation. In addition to its ability to efficiently integrate with smartphones, the system also offers 5G connectivity, cloud-connected navigation, and wireless compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Alexa Built-in is also standard, allowing drivers and passengers to ask the virtual assistant questions or issue commands to it, even if a smartphone is not connected to the SUV.
SYNC 4 also offers support for the new Kuga’s towing capabilities, including the Trailer Connection Checklist feature – which helps users ensure safe and secure connections. The system’s Trailer Tow Navigation feature enables drivers to enter the dimensions of their car and trailer so that it can determine and select a route that avoids tight turns, low bridges, and other obstacles.
The new SUV also offers a selection of ADAS, including a new Adaptive Cruise Control system that can now apply brakes automatically for curves, junctions, and other traffic. An accompanying 360-degree camera system offers an aerial view to assist the user in tasks such as parking, preparing to hitch up a trailer, or using an automatic car wash.
Ford confirmed that the new Kuga will be manufactured at its Valencia Body and Assembly plant in Spain, where parts are 3D printed to ensure accuracy and sustainability in the manufacturing process. The process also deploys AI technology, which the engineers will utilize to ensure the highest standards of quality and production.
