The US authority CPUC prohibits Waymo from expanding in California.

The CPUC has temporarily suspended Waymo’s expansion applications in San Mateo and Los Angeles due to local safety concerns and an incident in San Francisco. The suspension took effect Wednesday and could last 120 days. San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepda expressed concerns that the technology is not yet mature, but emphasized that local governments can provide policies and systems to make the technology safer.

Waymo has been operating a driverless taxi service in for about six months San Francisco and planned to expand into San Mateo County. San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepda expressed concerns about technology readiness and emphasized the role of local governments in providing safe operating policies. Some Redwood City residents expressed skepticism about driverless cars, emphasizing the importance of personal contact and the existing traffic burden. Waymo has not issued a statement, but points out that it has already experienced similar delays.
