“In terms of charging infrastructure, a lot is happening in the country, which means that the barriers to entry into electromobility are falling,” said the VW board member.
Despite the enthusiasm of the Americans for SUVs and heavy pickup trucks will, according to estimates of VWBoard member Jürgen Stackmann E-Mobility in the USA push through. “We are firmly on the assumption that especially in the American metropolitan areas on the east and west coast, the electrification is progressing quickly,” said the sales director of the core brand VW Passenger car of the German Press Agency on the edge of the auto show in Detroit. This was a “chance to quickly occupy large segments with Volkswagen and thus be ahead of the wave and not behind it”.
Despite the forecast weakening of the US market, the brand could grow there in 2018 as well. The project is ambitious. “But we’re sure we’ll be able to achieve good growth in 2018,” Stackmann explained. With regard to the continuing trend towards SUVs, he emphasized that even the classic US core segments such as sedans are important. “If we want to become the real volume manufacturer here in the market from the niche manufacturer, we must actively occupy the large fields,” Stackmann said with reference to the new Jetta.
In 2017, VW had boosted its sales in the US, where in 2015 the exhaust gas scandal around manipulated diesel engines had flown up, by 5.2 percent to 340 000 cars. In contrast, the number of delivered cars in December fell by 18.7 percent to about 30 300 pieces. Stackmann explained this with the emissions scandal and the buyback of diesel cars at the end of 2016: Some customers had bought a VW again afterwards, and VW could not reach this positive result again. That is also due to the model change in the Jetta, the Golf is still coming.
“The new Jetta could be a course driver for VW”
Stackmann describes electric cars as an “important building block for the future”: “In terms of charging infrastructure, a lot is happening in the country, which reduces the barriers to entry into electric mobility.” By 2020, VW wants to be on the market with the electric ID model family Prelude makes the SUV model ID Crozz. For the foreseeable future, the diesel would no longer be an option in the US after the emissions scandal.
