Revenue generated from registration of new vehicles in 2023 has broken past records, with the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) earning INR 261 crore from registration of two and four-wheelers.
Data of the past 10 years from 2014 to 2023 shows that RLA’s income increased nearly three times from INR 92.96 crore in 2014 to INR 261.67 crore in 2023. Data also revealed that revenue remained more than INR 100 crore from 2016 to 2021, except for the year 2020. It surpassed the INR 200 crore mark in 2022 and 2023.
“Significant increase in road tax is one of the key reasons for increase in revenue. Earlier, road tax of 2013 was in place but in 2023, it was revised significantly for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Tax slabs were also increased in case of registration within and outside Chandigarh as many outsiders who purchased vehicles started registering their vehicles in RLA Chandigarh,” sources said.
Data shows that barring the peak pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, annual registration of vehicles in Chandigarh from 2014 to 2023 remained between 45,000 and 51,000 annually. In 2020 and 2021, 30,550 and 36,964 vehicles were registered.
“Vehicle registration was drastically affected in 2020 as the department not only kept registration closed for a few days but also remained involved in many Covid duties, which was the priority at the time. This directly affected revenue in 2020, which declined sharply,” sources said.
