The city is reeling under the relentless menace of speeding vehicles, causing a wave of accidents. In Feb alone, four lives were cut short in separate incidents, with numerous others left injured due to excessive speeding.

Despite concerted efforts, law enforcement agencies struggle to rein in such incidents, particularly those occurring post-midnight when security measures are at their most lax.

Newly appointed additional commissioner of police (traffic), Preeti Chandra, conveyed to TOI that she has issued a directive to the traffic police, emphasising stringent patrolling to combat the surge in accidents.

Additionally, she convened a meeting with officials soon after assuming her post to deliberate on measures necessary to prevent fatal accidents.

“We have decided to intensify night patrolling throughout the city. Simultaneously, we’ve decided to implement rigorous checks at key locations,” she asserted.

Neha Khullar, director of projects and training at Muskaan Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to road safety, emphasized to TOI that the surge in accidents is a culmination of various issues.

“We’ve witnessed a steady decline in enforcement regulations over the past six months, which significantly contributes to fatal accidents,” she stated.

Khullar also highlighted the pressing issue of drunken driving, which often goes unaddressed. “Accidents caused by intoxicated drivers are frequently omitted from official data, yet they remain a major hazard. The proliferation of liquor-serving sites has worsened the this problem,” she added.
