TOKYO — Japan’s economy shrank an annualized 0.5% in January from the previous month due to a decline in auto production and sales stemming from a safety scandal at Daihatsu Motor, according to estimates compiled by the Japan Center for Economic Research.

The Japanese automaker halted output at its domestic factories from late 2023 over the safety test scandal.
