Piaggio unveils Kilo smart-following robot for industrial automation

Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF), the Boston-based branch of Piaggio Group specialising in future mobility and robotics, has unveiled Kilo, its latest innovation in smart-following technology.

Presented at Modex in Atlanta, Georgia—the premier supply chain event in the U.S.—Kilo, is a robotic platform capable of carrying up to 130 kg. It integrates advanced sensors and 4D radar imaging developed by PFF to autonomously follow operators and navigate pre-set paths, storing over 100 in its memory.

Greg Lynn, CEO of Piaggio Fast Forward, said “Our robotics technology is augmenting workforces around the world; Kilo offers customisable options with the ability to utilise state-of-the-art software tools to manage the human-robot relationship. From manufacturing to any industry that relies on the repetitive movement of goods across campuses and production facilities, PFF’s autonomous technology allows our robots to safely move with and around workers in complex environments, streamlining workflows and increasing productivity.”

Designed to complement human work, Kilo minimises injury risks and introduces PFF’s Travel on Known Paths software, allowing for innovative autonomous or follow-along operations.

The platform’s versatility is showcased in its customisation options, adaptable for specific industry needs through different carts or shelving. Furthermore, the PFF pro app facilitates fleet management and updates.

The Piaggio Group is integrating Kilo into its Moto Guzzi production lines in Mandello del Lario as part of a modernisation initiative, with plans to expand its use across its global manufacturing sites.

Kilo adds to the Piaggio Fast Forward lineup, joining gita and gitamini, and aims to meet the rising demand for last-mile delivery solutions, pending appropriate regulatory frameworks.

Additionally, PFF’s technology has been adapted for the Moto Guzzi Stelvio motorcycle, marking the first motorcycle application of their radar sensors. This innovation offers enhanced safety features including Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Information System, Lane Change Assist, and Following Cruise Control, surpassing traditional systems in reliability and field of vision.
