New Delhi: In a demonstration of coordination between civil and military agencies, the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted operations on an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) airstrip situated on National Highway 16 near Addanki in Bapatla district.
On March 18, 2024, Su30 and Hawk fighters executed overshoots, while An-32 and Dornier transport aircraft landed and took off from the facility.
This activation highlighted the collaboration between various stakeholders including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), district administration, state police, and the IAF. The joint effort underscored the ability to conduct complex multifaceted activities with precision and efficacy.
Constructed by NHAI to IAF specifications, the 4.1 km long and 33 m wide concrete airstrip has been developed to cater to emergency situations. While similar airstrips exist across the country, this ELF in Andhra Pradesh marks a recent addition in peninsular India.
Emergency Landing Facility highway airstrips play a pivotal role in enhancing the flexibility of air operations during crises, particularly in remote regions. These assets are invaluable during Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, providing critical support in challenging terrains.
Looking ahead, the IAF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), aims to establish ELFs at strategic locations across the country. The proactive approach towards creating such infrastructure underscores the commitment to bolstering national security and disaster response capabilities.
