ACI: the second-hand market is down in March, affected by two fewer working days

04.08.2024

A minus sign in March for the second-hand market, conditioned by the presence of two fewer working days compared to the same month in 2023.

Changes in ownership of cars net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting resale to the end customer) resulted in a decline of 2.1% compared to March 2023, which however in terms of daily average is in an appreciable increase of 7.3%. For every 100 new cars, 162 second-hand cars were sold in March and 181 in the first quarter of the year.

No significant news regarding the engines. Also in March, traditional fuel systems (diesel and petrol) continue to prevail on the used car market, while the comeback of petrol hybrid cars continues, which with a monthly increase of 41.3% have reached a market share of 6.8%. %. Sales of electric (+48.4%) and diesel hybrids (+70.6%) are also growing, the impact of which remains extremely limited (0.7% and 1.2% respectively). Diesel engines are once again confirmed at the top of the mini-transfer rankings (49.3% share in March 2024, down compared to March 2023, when it was 53.5%). The incidence of petrol hybrids stands at 8.5% and that of LPG cars at 7.5%. Finally, the 71.9% leap in diesel hybrids is highlighted, despite their percentage of the total mini-transfers still remaining below 2%.

The balance sheet is also in the red for transfers of ownership of motorcycles which, net of mini-transfers, recorded a monthly decrease of 12.3% compared to March 2024, which remains in negative territory even when calculating the two less working days (- 3.9% the daily average).

In the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, net ownership transfers recorded increases of 8% for cars, 0.7% for motorcycles and 6.4% for all vehicles.

The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.

Radiation procedures in the four-wheel sector increased in March. Car radiation recorded an increase of 8.3% compared to March 2023, which further rises to 18.6% in terms of daily average. The monthly unit replacement rate is equal to 0.59 (for every 100 new cars 59 were written off), standing at 0.73 in the first quarter of the year. On the contrary, motorcycle radiation is in negative territory, recording a monthly decrease of 6.8% in March, which however converts into an increase of 2.1% in terms of the daily average.

From January to March 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, radiation increased by 25.1% for cars, 12.8% for motorcycles and 24.7% for all vehicles.
