Zoox: NHTSA investigates Amazon startup

Zoox is at the center of the investigation by US authorities. There have been accidents involving autonomous cars.

The US-American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has conducted an investigation into self-driving vehicles Zoox initiated, the Amazon heard after two rear-end collisions occurred in which motorcyclists were injured.

Both accidents were caused by unexpected braking. The NHTSA is investigating 500 Zoox vehicles with automated driving systems after two Toyota Highlanders with the Zoox system were involved in rear-end collisions.

Zoox has promised to cooperate with the authorities, but has not provided any further details about the incidents. The investigation will evaluate the performance of the Zoox Automated Driving System in connection with the accidents, as well as its behavior in pedestrian crossings and similar situations.

Back in March 2023, the NHTSA opened an investigation into Zoox’s self-certification of a robotaxis without traditional driving controls.
