TVS Motor Co has opened FY2025 with two-wheeler sales of 301,449 units in April 2024, up 29% YoY (April 2024: 232,956 units) in the domestic market. This total comprised 132,339 scooters (up 38%), 127,186 motorcycles (up 24%), and 41,924 mopeds (up 20%).
While TVS’ scooter sales continue to be dominated by the Jupiter and NTorq, the two-wheeled product which continues to make news and sell in big numbers is the TVS Raider 125.
The Raider, which is TVS Motor Co’s first 125cc motorcycle, was the company’s best-selling motorcycle in FY2024, selling 478,443 units (up 100% YoY) to go ahead of the popular TVS Apache series’ 378,072 units. It was also TVS’ third-best-selling product after the flagship Jupiter scooter and the XL moped (481,803 units), in FY2024 missing out on the second spot by just 3,360 units.
In FY2024, the Raider 125 averaged monthly sales of 39,870 units and was TVS’ best-selling motorcycle. In April 2024, it has sold 51,098 units, up 62%.
At the end of FY2024, the Raider 125 with cumulative wholesales of 794,573 units was just 5,247 units shy of 800,000 sales in India. With industry body SIAM releasing the wholesales numbers for April 2024 yesterday, latest data reveals that the Raider 125 has begun FY2025 with strong sales of 51,098 units, up 62% YoY (April 2023: 31,491 units), once again ahead of the Apache brand, which has clocked sales of 45,520 units, up 19% YoY (April 2023: 38,148 units).
Zero to 800,000 in 31 months
This latest round of sales means that cumulative sales of the Raider 125 have gone past the 800,000 unit sales mark in the domestic market. From launch on September 16, 2021 through to end-April 2024, the Raider 125 has taken a scant 31 months to achieve the milestone, efficiently capturing demand in the rapidly-growing 125cc commuter motorcycle market and turning out to be a key contributor to TVS’ overall growth in the two-wheeler market. Among the new products that are catering to surging demand for sporty 125cc motorcycles, the tech-laden Raider continues to witness an accelerating pace of consumer acceptance from Gen-Z motorcycle buyers.
The TVS Raider 125 is part of an extremely competitive segment, which has well-established products like the Hero Glamour, Super Splendor and more recently the Xtreme 125, Bajaj Pulsar and Honda Shine. In April 2024, the Raider 125 accounted for 40% of TVS’ total motorcycle sales and 17% of total two-wheeler sales.
Sporty styling draws Gen-Z biking aficionados
Available in three variants (single seat, split seat and ZX), the Raider 125’s on-road Mumbai pricing starts at Rs 93,700 for the single-seat bike, Rs 94,700 for the split seat variant and to Rs 100,800 for the range-topping Raider 125SX.
The TVS Raider 125’s standout elements include its athletic-looking styling in the form of the muscular tank, snazzy headlight and minimalist tail-lamp, as also the split seat. Clearly, the snazzy styling with more than a hint of sportiness, when compared to the staid designs of most of its rivals, seems to have paid dividends to the Raider 125. What seems to have drawn buyers to the TVS Raider 125 is also the number of features like daytime running lights, pass-light switch, pillion grabrail, pillion seat, pillion footrest, tripmeter, electric start and clock.
Voted Autocar India’s Bike of the Year 2022, for its combination of striking looks, punchy engine and value-for-money proposition, the Raider 125 is powered by TVS’ potent 124.8cc engine, which develops 11.4hp and 11.2 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed transmission. TVS claims this motorcycle, which is shod with 17-inch tyres, accelerates from 0-60kph in 5.9 seconds and goes on to hit a top speed of 99kph. Fuel efficiency is a claimed 67 kilometres per litre.
