Researchers at IIT-Jodhpur have unveiled a novel adaptor that allows electric vehicles to be charged using solar power. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his vision for a system where electric vehicles could be powered by energy from rooftop solar systems.

Nishant Kumar, an Assistant Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Jodhpur, revealed that the adaptor is expected to cost under INR 1,000. Kumar emphasized, “This could be particularly effective if the solar panel initiative succeeds.”

Kumar also highlighted the growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs), noting that government subsidies are currently in place to encourage their purchase.

“Our charging adaptor will connect to the solar panel on one side and to the company’s charger on the other,” Kumar explained. “It includes two points that will supply power according to the requirement.”

Kumar mentioned that one significant challenge is extracting maximum power from a solar panel without a power converter, making a charging adaptor essential. He pointed out, “The charger provided by the company cannot draw power from a solar panel and operate it.”

Addressing this issue is a global endeavor, Kumar added, with several countries, including India, actively seeking solutions. He said that setting up widespread charging infrastructure over the next five years would be formidable.

“Countries such as the US, Canada, China, Russia, India, and Australia are planning to install rooftop solar panels,” Kumar stated.

Concerns about the scarcity of charging stations and resources for EVs persist among potential buyers. Kumar highlighted how battery depletion during travel, particularly in hilly and remote areas, exacerbates the problem.

“The adaptor will work with all types of vehicles, and a prototype has been created and tested successfully,” Kumar confirmed. He added that the product would soon be available in the market.
