Nissan has revealed the fourth-generation X-Trail SUV for India ahead of its launch in the coming days. The SUV will be brought in as a CBU (completely built unit). With the X-Trail’s introduction, Nissan India’s line-up will double, as it currently only has the Magnite compact SUV in its portfolio.
While the fourth-gen X-Trail, based on the CMF-C platform, has been on sale overseas since 2021 in 5- and 7-seater form, India will get the three-row version. The X-Trail has an upright, squared-out look and features a split-headlamp setup, a ‘V-Motion’ grille finished in dark chrome, rounded wheel arches with plastic cladding, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and wraparound LED tail-lamps.
Autocar India had previously reported on the colour options that Nissan will offer with the X-Trail in India: Diamond Black, Champagne Silver and Solid White. According to Alfonso Albaisa, SVP Nissan Design, these colours were chosen to better position the X-Trail as a premium offering.
Dimension-wise, the X-Trail is 4,680mm long, 1,840mm wide, 1,725mm tall, and has a 2,705mm-long wheelbase. The 7-seater SUV has a 5.5m turning radius, 210mm of ground clearance, and is shod with 255/45 R20 tyres.
The inside story
From the teasers Nissan India had sent out, it’s known that the X-Trail will sport a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, wireless smartphone charger, keyless entry and push-button start. Other features shown earlier include drive modes, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold function and cruise control.
Now, Nissan has confirmed that the India-spec model also gets a 360-degree camera and paddle shifters. The second row has a 40/20/40 split-folding, sliding and reclining functions, while the third row gets 50/50 split-folding and reclining functions.
Safety kit on the India-spec X-Trail includes seven airbags, auto wipers, ABS and EBD, traction control, a limited-slip diff, hill-start assist and front parking sensors.
The X-Trail for India will be offered with just a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The unit features a variable compression ratio, and comes with a 12V mild-hybrid system that produces 163hp and 300Nm. The powertrain will be paired with a shift-by-wire CVT auto gearbox that is said to have negligible rubberband effect.
Nissan X-Trail expected price, rivals
Considering the SUV will be brought in as a CBU, the X-Trail’s prices are expected to be in the Rs 40 lakh-45 lakh region. This would put it in direct contention with the Toyota Fortuner (Rs 33.43 lakh-51.44 lakh*), its Legender derivative (Rs 43.66 lakh-47.64 lakh*), the Skoda Kodiaq (Rs 39.99 lakh), the MG Gloster (Rs 38.80 lakh-43.16 lakh) and the Jeep Meridian (Rs 29.49 lakh-39.83 lakh).
For Nissan, the X-Trail will help reinvigorate interest in the brand as it readies a fresh product onslaught from 2025 onwards.
