TOKYO — The expected entry by Mitsubishi Motors into the planned strategic partnership between Honda Motor and Nissan Motor represents the latest effort by Japanese automakers to pool their resources to catch up to foreign rivals in electric vehicles.
The anticipated alliance essentially would divide Japan’s auto industry into two camps: the trio, with combined annual sales of over 8.33 million vehicles, and the Toyota Motor group, whose tie-ups with Subaru, Mazda Motor and others account for combined sales of around 16 million.
