Madrid, August 1, 2024. The passenger car market increased slightly by 3.4% in July, with a total of 83,979 units sold, which maintains the upward trend of recent months. The improvement in sales to individuals has allowed the market to boost in the seventh month. Despite this, July is below 100,000 units, a figure that used to be traditionally recorded in this month before the pandemic. In this sense, until the seventh month, 619,224 units have been added, which, although it is 5.6% more than in 2023, is still 23.4% lower than the 2019 records.

For its part, the electrified passenger car market fell 4% in July, with 8,242 units sold. This decline in sales has caused the electric and plug-in hybrid market to decline in its share of the general market, with 9.8%. A figure even lower than that recorded in 2023, which stood at 10.6%. For the year as a whole, the electrified market remains flat compared to 2023, accumulating 64,127 units and 10.36% of the total market.

The average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in July remain at 118.5 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled, 0.7% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month of 2023. In total of the year, an average of 117.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled is recorded, 0.64% lower.

Regarding sales by channels, with a 16.8% increase, the retail market registered notable growth, reaching a total of 40,993 units in July. Félix García, director of communication and marketing at ANFAC, explained that “July maintains the upward trend of recent months, with a slight growth of 3%, although we are still 23% below pre-pandemic volumes. It should be noted that traditionally July is usually a month in which 100,000 registrations are exceeded, a figure that we did not reach this month. Recovering pre-pandemic market figures is not only an economic issue, but also one more step towards the required emissions reduction objectives. The entry of new vehicles will help rejuvenate a park that is already 14.2 years old. The extension of MOVES until the end of the year must serve as an important stimulus for buyers and that the entry of sustainable vehicles is in line with the achievement of the objectives set and required.”

Raúl Morales, communication director of FACONAUTO, indicated that “last month’s registrations confirm that July is a good month commercially for dealers, although it is true that they have had two more business days of sales, which has had a positive impact on the final result of the month. The sector, dealers and brands have been able to mobilize customers thanks also to a greater promotional effort. Above all, we must highlight the good performance of the individual channel, the one-to-one sales made by the dealer, which, on this occasion, is close to 50% of all registrations, breaking somewhat the dynamic of past months where its contribution was minor. Unfortunately, we have to continue talking about last month’s registrations that the contribution of electrified vehicles and plug-in electric vehicles is still not taking off in our country, it is stagnant at approximately 10% of registrations. In this regard, we must continue to affirm and say that the MOVES Plan remains operational until December 31 of this year and that those customers who are thinking of purchasing an electrified vehicle can still benefit from this aid.

GANVAM’s communications director, Tania Puche, pointed out that “last month we had the calendar in our favor. There were two more business days than in July 2023 and this circumstance has contributed to the growth in registrations. We also cannot lose sight of the fact that we have remained below 100,000 units, which is what is considered the natural volume of our market, and that we are still more than 20% below pre-pandemic levels. Taking these factors into account, we must highlight the good performance of individual purchases. This channel has driven the market, largely due to the increase in the promotional efforts of distributors, who have increased their discounts on average by nearly 18% compared to last year. In this way, the month of July is confirmed as one of the months preferred by drivers to change cars, since this way they take the opportunity to drive it on vacation.”
