SEMI®, the global industry association representing the semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing sectors, has announced a strategic agreement with the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) at the start of SEMICON India 2024. As part of the agreement, IESA will join the SEMI network while maintaining its current brand, with plans to adopt SEMI’s processes and initiatives.
This partnership is aimed at advancing India’s semiconductor design and manufacturing capabilities. It aligns with the country’s “Make in India” initiative and focuses on enhancing domestic manufacturing, workforce development, and global competitiveness. The collaboration will provide SEMI members with direct access to India’s semiconductor market, opening new growth opportunities.
Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, noted that this partnership strengthens SEMI’s presence in India, enabling both organisations to work together on supply chain resilience and growth strategies. Dr. Veerappan, Chairperson, and Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, highlighted the potential of the partnership to attract global investments and accelerate the development of India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The agreement also includes joint efforts in policy advocacy, with both organisations collaborating with government bodies to support programs like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Design Linked Incentive (DLI) schemes, aimed at fostering product development and manufacturing.
At the Semiconductor Executive Forum on 10th September, industry leaders from SEMI and IESA engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on accelerating the development of the semiconductor industry. SEMICON India 2024, with over 600 exhibitors and global participation, is expected to be a significant event for the semiconductor sector in India.
