How are careers at VW made in Wolfsburg: With Herbert Diess comes the manager, who had started to grind the union stronghold Volkswagen, probably all the way up – with the blessing of Works Council Chairman Bernd Osterloh. However, the special power of the employees is ensured for the good Wolfsburg compromise. At any rate, this is the situation before the decision in the VW Supervisory Board on Friday.

The Personality Gunnar Kilian is the clearest signal. The Osterloh confidant is traded for the post of HR Director. He would replace in the office Karlheinz Blessing, a longtime IG Metaller, who once worked for the legendary union leader Franz Steinkühler, later became SPD secretary general and steelworks manager in Saarland. So far, so normal in the co-determined corporation.

But Kilian is a different caliber: He was not just any trade union-minded manager, but Secretary General of the Group Works Council. Thus, Osterloh could practically double this, personally as a works council, and influence his former employee as a counterpart on the board.
