Amara Raja Group’s HR case study featured by Harvard Business School Publishing

The Amara Raja Group, a global conglomerate with a turnover of $2 billion, has announced that its latest case study, “Transforming the HR Function for Vision 2025 and Beyond,” has been listed by Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP). The case study was developed by Prof. Biju Varkkey from IIM Ahmedabad and Dr. Fareen Fathima from XLRI Jamshedpur, highlighting the company’s efforts to modernize its human resources (HR) strategy.

This is the second case study from Amara Raja to be published by HBSP, following the 2019 release of “The Amara Raja Group: Building HRM Capabilities.” The new case study reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to reshape its HR framework as part of its Vision 2025 strategy. It has been added to the Harvard Business School case repository under an arrangement with IIM Ahmedabad, making it accessible to educators and learners globally.

The first case study from 2019 explored Amara Raja’s HR structure and organizational culture, while the new study focuses on the group’s transformation toward a future-ready HR model. Both case studies have been used in academic programs at IIM Ahmedabad and other educational institutions worldwide.

Amara Raja Group’s Executive Director, Vikramadithya Gourineni, emphasized the importance of empowering employees and upskilling the rural workforce, noting that the company’s inclusion in the HBSP repository is a recognition of its HR practices. Jaikrishna B, President & Group CHRO, added that the company’s HR transformation has been supported by strong leadership and employee engagement, contributing to its growth.

Prof. Biju Varkkey of IIM Ahmedabad noted that the case study offers valuable insights into Amara Raja’s HR approach, particularly its focus on non-migratory employment and the shift from a support-based HR function to a strategic role within the company.

Amara Raja Group was an early adopter of Dave Ulrich’s HR organization structure, which includes HR Business Partners, Centers of Expertise, and Shared Services. This model has been a key factor in the company’s growth, along with its unique organizational culture, referred to as “The Amara Raja Way®.”
