Madrid, October 1, 2024. The passenger car market grows 6.3% in September, with 73,144 sales. This figure manages to recover the positive path that it had during the year and that had fallen back last month. Both the improvement in sales to the individual channel and the strong rebound in the electrified passenger car market have allowed the month to close positively. As of September, a total of 744,698 units have been sold, which, although it represents an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous year, is still 23% below 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Noteworthy is the notable growth of the electrified passenger car market, which had slowed down in previous months. In September, sales grew by 20%, to a total of 10,392 units, which represents 14.2% of the market for the month. This improvement brings a total of 80,225 units up to the ninth month, which allows electrified sales to once again be in growth figures, with an increase of 0.6% compared to the previous year and with 10.77% of the market in the anus.

The average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in September remain at 112.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled, 3.4% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month of 2023. In total of the year, an average of 117.3 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled is recorded, 0.8% lower.

Regarding sales by channels, the market to individuals achieved a notable improvement in the month with a growth of 10.5%, with 36,639 units. Likewise, sales to rent-a-car registered 4,773 new passenger cars, which represents an increase of 34.4%. For its part, although sales aimed at companies total 31,732 units, this represents a decrease of 1.1% compared to the same month in 2023.

LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Registrations of light commercial vehicles achieved a strong improvement in September, with an increase of 15.9% and 12,829 units. Until the ninth month, there were 122,132 sales, which represents a growth of 16.6% in the year. Regarding sales by channels, they all managed to rebound in September, with the market aimed at self-employed workers being the one that grew the most, with 32.4%. While sales to companies total 9,224 units in the month.

By type of vehicle, both industrial vehicles with an increase of 31.1% and 2,233 sales, and buses and coaches with a rise of 24.3% and 787 units, managed to improve results compared to the same period of the previous year.

STATEMENTS

Félix García, director of communication and marketing at ANFAC, explained that “it is very good news that the market is growing after the drop in sales suffered in August. The general increase of 6% is very positive, especially for individuals who grow above double digits, which means that citizens continue to want to renew their old car for a new one. It is satisfying to see how citizens continue to have interest in purchasing cleaner and, increasingly, more connected and safer vehicles. The fact that the hybrid vehicle continues to gain market share results in the increasing presence of sustainability in the purchasing decision. It would be good for people to take the definitive leap towards electromobility if there were a public dissemination campaign in favor of electric vehicles. The private and clean car is another alternative to mobility for those who do not have public transportation that offers them the same service to get around in their daily chores.”

Raúl Morales, communication director of FACONAUTO, indicated that “the increase in registrations in the month of September is somewhat misleading since it has been due above all to the growth in acquisitions made by vehicle rental companies. The good tone in the individual channel is maintained, and this is very important, that one-to-one sale that the dealer makes, and which is always good news. In terms of technologies, we must comment on the strong increase that the electrified vehicle has had, but it must be pointed out, caused especially by the contribution of a single brand whose commercial policy has surely distorted the market somewhat. Without that contribution we would be talking about 10% more or less penetration of the electrified vehicle, which is what we have been seeing in previous months. In this sense and, with respect to technologies, the client is leading the way for us. “40% of all sales made last month corresponded to conventional hybrids.”

GANVAM’s communications director, Tania Puche, pointed out that “after the decline recorded in August, the market resumes its upward path in September, coinciding with a time in which inflation moderates, reaching its lowest level in more than of three years. In this context, the positive behavior of purchases by individuals and rental companies during the past month narrows the gap with pre-pandemic figures, although we are still far from reaching the volumes necessary to promote the renewal of the park. Hence the need to implement effective incentive plans to remove the oldest and most polluting vehicles from circulation and contribute to making zero and low emission models an affordable mobility solution.”
