It was with the complicity of employees of the Stellantis factories in Sochaux-Montbéliard and Mulhouse Sausheim that five people, indicted for organized theft and criminal association, allegedly stole vehicles. This Monday evening, October 8, the Mulhouse public prosecutor’s office announced the placement in pre-trial detention of these people, seasoned and specialized in car thefts.
Investigators looked into thefts committed between the beginning of 2022 and July 2024. More than 75 stolen cars were identified: Peugeot 30008, 208 and 308, produced on these sites.
With the help of accomplices in the factories, the thieves allegedly used an employee badge to take the vehicles out, via the park and ride, only one or two at a time: “It was almost invisible as there were so many vehicles in transit and waiting on the site” specified the prosecution.
This method made the identification of a theft network all the more difficult as the stolen cars had never been sold, and their serial numbers were therefore not known. These cars were mostly resold in North Africa, particularly in Algeria.
Nine people were initially arrested on September 17, most with extensive criminal records. Significant seizures were made during these arrests and the searches that followed: luxury cars as well as 50,000 euros in cash from one of them.
The man suspected of being the mastermind of the operation, a 62-year-old man, had already been indicted for similar cases committed in 2018.
Only five individuals were therefore indicted. They face up to 10 years in prison.
