We’re Tracking the Best October Prime Day 2024 Deals Live

Powered speakers, those with amplification and inputs built in, have been around for decades, but it took a long time to get an all-in-one stereo system that worked seamlessly with your TV like a soundbar. Klipsch’s awkwardly named system, The Fives, were the first powered speakers I tried that did it right, and they’re still among the best you’ll find for the money.

Like a soundbar, The Fives offer both wired and wireless audio inputs, including HDMI ARC connection for fluent communication with your TV. That lets you conveniently control power and volume with your TV remote and easily switch to other sources like a built-in phono input for your turntable, optical input for a CD player or older TV, and Bluetooth with aptX for music streaming. There’s no Wi-Fi onboard, which limits your streaming options, but the system is still compatible with a mobile app for Settings and EQ control over Bluetooth LE. The built-in subwoofer output even lets you upgrade to a 2.1 system with any powered sub. It’s a pretty sweet deal, especially at this price.

Most importantly, The Fives serve up clear, rich, and dynamic audio performance. This is the minimalist sound solution for music lovers, trading the limitations of plastic, pint-size soundbars for full-size speakers. With vintage looks and tactile controls, they’re also devilishly stylish. Plenty of great bookshelf speakers with HDMI connection have popped up around The Fives, but if you can find them at this price they’re very tough to beat.
