This Monday, November 4, 2024 marks a new milestone for the Stellantis production site in Sochaux, which responds to growing demand for the E-3008 and E-5008 SUVs by strengthening its production capacity. With the installation of a third shift, or rather a “half shift” at night, the factory plans to increase its production volume by 200 additional vehicles per day. This strategic adjustment allows Stellantis to move up a gear, to better cope with orders.
The addition of this night shift represents a total of 450 additional workers on site. In terms of composition, this team includes 35% permanent employees, while 65% of positions are filled by temporary workers, recruited largely locally in North Franche-Comté, but also abroad. Although the team officially begins its operations today, it has nevertheless already been working at a reduced pace for several days to allow workers to familiarize themselves with the production lines and ensure a gradual increase in skills.
This reinforcement shows Stellantis’ desire to rely on local resources and strengthen its roots in the region, thus contributing to the economic growth of northern Franche-Comté. But the employees are “impatiently awaiting the arrival of a complete team to lighten the workload”, confides Thierry Giroux, FO at the Sochaux factory.
It is true that this decision may seem surprising in a context where Stellantis has just announced a drop in turnover of 33 billion euros, due to unfavorable economic conditions, particularly in the American market. Carlos Tavares’ group is now counting on the ramp-up of the twenty new vehicles launched in 2024, such as the new Peugeot 3008, which recorded 75,000 orders, or the Citroën C3 (50,000 orders). The group also launched entry-level electric models from its Chinese partner Leapmotor in Europe.
By strengthening its production in Sochaux, Stellantis not only responds to the growing needs of European markets, but also demonstrates its ability to quickly adapt to fluctuations in demand. All that remains is to observe whether this bet will pay off for the group, which is banking on electrification and increased production to get back on the path to growth.
