JK Tyre Joins RE100, targeting for 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality by 2050

JK Tyre & Industries, a prominent tyre manufacturer in India, has joined RE100, focusing to achieve 100% renewable electricity use by 2050 as part of its sustainability goals. With this step, JK Tyre becomes the first Indian tyre company and the 16th Indian business to join the RE100 initiative.

To reach this target, JK Tyre has set a midterm goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 50% by the fiscal year 2030, using the financial year 2019 as the base year. The company’s focus aligns with its aim to advance sustainable practices in the industry, while also preparing for evolving climate regulations.

Commenting on the RE100 membership, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre, stated, “Our decision to join RE100 reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility. At JK Tyre, we prioritize energy efficiency and conservation, and we are proud to join industry leaders in the transition to renewable energy sources.”

Dr. Divya Sharma, India Executive Director of the Climate Group, noted that JK Tyre’s decision to adopt 100% renewable electricity by 2050 marks a significant commitment, demonstrating that large-scale manufacturing can integrate renewable energy solutions. She expressed enthusiasm for the company’s membership in RE100 and the progress to come.

JK Tyre has consistently increased its renewable energy usage by 2-5% annually and has implemented or procured green energy for its facilities. Currently, 40% of the company’s energy consumption is sourced from renewables. Since the base year of 2013-14, JK Tyre has reduced its GHG emission intensity by 64% and has also established benchmarks in water usage across its Indian manufacturing sites, achieving Zero Liquid Discharge, Zero-Waste-to-Landfill status, and eliminating single-use plastic.

RE100, a global initiative led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, brings together over 400 companies from diverse sectors committed to 100% renewable electricity.
