Bitkom survey on autonomous driving

Autonomous means of transport: 76 percent of Germans are open to self-driving S-Bahn and subway trains.

A representative survey by the digital association Bitkom shows a growing acceptance of autonomous means of transport in Germany. 76 percent of those surveyed can imagine using self-driving S-Bahn and subway trains – an increase compared to previous years. Those surveyed see great potential for autonomous vehicles, particularly in local public transport.

Bitkom Umfrage zu Autonomem Fahren

Willingness varies depending on the means of transport: 77 percent would autonomous shuttles 65 percent use a self-driving taxi and 62 percent use an autonomous private car. With longer distances, acceptance decreases: Only 50 percent can imagine traveling in an autonomous regional or long-distance train, 39 percent would use an autonomous ship and only 32 percent would board an autonomous plane.

A significant finding is that 61 percent of Germans believe that in 20 years the majority of transport will be controlled autonomously. Dr. Bernhard Rohleder from Bitkom emphasizes the enormous potential, especially in… Public transport, where autonomous trains could enable closer timing, which is currently failing due to a lack of passengers.

The Opinion poll is based on 1,005 respondents aged 16 and over in Germany.
