ChargePoint to join Hubject ecosystem, will implement Plug & Charge EV charging

One of the biggest problems with public EV charging is the fragmented nature of the networks (now more fashionably known as CPOs). Charging an EV should be as easy as using a cell phone, but many CPOs still expect drivers to download apps, set up passwords, etc. Ugh!

Hubject has developed an eRoaming platform that provides standardized access to EV charging infrastructure by allowing members of a charging network (or EMP) to connect to chargers belonging to other participating networks. Hubject says it connects over 1,000,000 charging points and over 2,250 B2B partners across 63 countries and 4 continents.

Now Hubject is hooking up with ChargePoint. By integrating ISO 15118-2 standards and Hubject’s Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), this collaboration allows ChargePoint customers in North America and Europe to connect with other Hubject partners. What’s more, it will enable ChargePoint clients to use Plug & Charge, a vehicle-based authentication system that can initiate charging as soon as a driver plugs in, and handle authentication and billing with no need for apps, RFID cards or other vestiges of the early EV era.

“ChargePoint is committed to delivering a safe, accessible and reliable charging experience for all EV drivers, wherever they live, work and play.” said Kor Meelker, Director of Global Standards at ChargePoint. “The partnership with Hubject will ensure that we fully support our EV drivers with the convenience of Plug & Charge, delivering an enhanced charging experience.”
