In front of the Stellantis factory in Metz Borny (Moselle), the announcement of the boss’s departure raises questions this Monday morning, December 2, 2024. The resignation, with immediate effect, of Carlos Tavares was accepted by the board of directors of the automobile group during on weekends. In Metz, beyond the element of surprise, employees remain on their guard.

“We remain very attentive to the future, to jobs and industrial sites in France. We would not like to repeat what happened in 2013, with a major restructuring of sites and job losses,” explains Vincent Piette, FO Stellantis Metz-Borny secretary.

What will be the vision of his replacement? This is the big question mark

Philippe Petry, CFDT delegate at the Stellantis factory in Metz-Borny

“What worries employees today is that we have visibly pushed Carlos Tavares to resign, and there is no plan B,” Philippe Pétry told Agence France Presse (AFP) , CFDT union delegate at the Metz-Borny factory.

Carlos Tavares “had faults, qualities, but he was an industrialist. He oriented the company towards electricity (…) What will be the vision of his replacement? That’s the big question mark” , continues Philippe Pétry.

When we know that Mr. Tavares earned €100,000 per day, […] we say to ourselves that he brought billions to the shareholders and we got nothing back

Jean-Charles Payet, CGT delegate Stellantis Metz-Borny

The Borny site specializes in the manufacture of gearboxes, particularly for hybrid and electric motors, which is growing strongly, according to the FO union. The second Moselle site is located in Trémery, it specializes in the manufacture of engines and has started a large transition towards electric. A production which should ramp up next year. For the CGT, the departure of the CEO is not something the union regrets.

“Clearly, none of the employees on the site here will miss Mr. Tavares… The policy that was put in place by Mr. Tavares was a job loss, with site closures and excessive flexibility for employees who ruined our lives… There were a few salary increases, but really marginal when we know that Mr. Tavares earned €100,000 per day, including weekends, every day of the year. says that it brought in billions to shareholders and we have not recovered any of these billions”, Jean-Charles Payet, CGT Stellantis Metz-Borny delegate.

Employees’ fear of seeing the elimination and restructuring policy prolonged in view of the group’s poor results. Stellantis revenue fell 27% in the third quarter of 2024.
