India registers 36.39 lakh EVs, captures 3.38% market share in 5 years

New Delhi: Driving towards India’s sustainability goal, the Indian automobile market is transitioning from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles to sustainable fuel vehicles, such as electric vehicles (EVs), CNG, and others. With the help of multiple government schemes such as FAME Scehme, PLI-Auto scheme, PM E-DRIVE, and many more, 36.39 lakh EVs were registered in the last five years, according to MoRTH’s Vahan data.

Out of 10,75,31,040 vehicles registered in the last five years (from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024), 36,39,617 vehicle registrations were EVs. This represents an overall Indian EV market share of 3.38% in the automobile market. Uttar Pradesh led the race in EV registrations, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan, which grabbed the top five positions.

Here are the top 10 states/UTs based on the percentage of total vehicle registrations from 01/04/2019 to 31/03/2024:

The least EV registrations were observed in Sikkim (0%), Lakshadweep (0.69%), Nagaland (0.02%), Arunachal Pradesh (0.03%), and Ladakh (0.45%).

Government initiatives for EV adoption

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has launched multiple schemes to promote the adoption and localisation of electric vehicles in India, along with the development of robust infrastructure. Some of these schemes include:

1) FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India) Scheme:
The government introduced this scheme for five years starting from April 1, 2019, with a total budgetary support of INR 11,500 crore. This scheme promoted and incentivized electric two-wheelers (e2Ws), three-wheelers (e3Ws), four-wheelers (e4Ws), electric buses, and public charging infrastructure.

2) PLI Auto (Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the Automobile and Auto Component Industry):
Launched on September 23, 2021, this scheme aims to enhance manufacturing capabilities for Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) products. It comes with a budget of INR 25,938 crore for the automobile and auto component industry in India.

3) PM E-DRIVE Scheme (PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement):
This scheme, launched on September 29, 2024, has an outlay of INR 10,900 crore. It focuses on electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, ambulances, public charging stations, and the upgradation of vehicle testing agencies.
