Madrid, January 2, 2025. Sales of passenger cars close the year with a total of 1,016,885 units, 7.1% more than the previous year. A figure that allows us to overcome the barrier of one million units after four consecutive years, which had not been reached since before the start of the pandemic. The good performance of December, with an increase of 28.8% compared to the same month in 2023 and 105,346 units, has allowed us to exceed this figure. A December that closes, for the first time since there are records, as the best month of the year due to the final sales sprint from both individuals and renters.

Regarding sales of electrified passenger cars (BEV+PHEV), they managed to close 2024 positively, with an increase of 1.9% and a total of 115,939 units. Despite closing December with a 14.4% share and a slight increase in volume, in the accumulated annual figure it continues to represent 11.4% of the total, six tenths below 2023, when it reached 12%.

The average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in December remain at 112.2 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled, 0.4% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month of 2023. In total of the year, an average of 116.4 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled is recorded, 0.5% lower than in 2023.

Regarding sales by channels, the good performance of the market aimed at individuals, companies and renters in the last month has been fundamental in exceeding one million units at the end of the year. Specifically, sales to individuals, in the total for the year, have reached 456,993 units, 8.9% more. Likewise, renters obtained 186,126 units, with an increase of 36.8%. For their part, companies reached 373,826 units, with a slight decline of 5.1%.

LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Registrations of light commercial vehicles increased by 10.7% in December, with 14,532 units. In the total for the year, 165,847 units are accumulated, with an annual increase of 13.6%. By channels during 2024, all obtain increases compared to the previous year. Specifically, sales to companies total 116,466 units, 8.9% more. The self-employed grew by up to 24.1%, with 27,896 sales. Félix García, director of communication and marketing at ANFAC, explained that “we ended 2024 surpassing the barrier of one million units. A figure that had not been reached since before the pandemic and that had limited our market in the last four years. The good performance of sales in the last quarter driven by the final sprint of purchases by companies and renters has allowed us to close the year above one million. We continue on the path to recovering the sales volume of 1.2 million units that Spain must aspire to as the fourth largest European economy. To achieve this, it is necessary both to maintain the aid plans for the purchase of electrified vehicles and to continue showing support from the administrations that encourage citizens to buy a new vehicle and if it is electrified, even better.”

Raúl Morales, communication director of FACONAUTO, indicated that “Spain closes the year with data highly anticipated by the sector: vehicle registrations have once again exceeded one million units, something that has not happened since 2019. This milestone comes after a period of uncertainty, marked by a flat market for much of the year. However, the last quarter has represented a clear change in trend, driven by the acceleration in the registrations of electrified vehicles, the effect of the fleet renewal plans that are already operational in many autonomous communities and, unfortunately, the extraordinary operations recorded. in the Valencian Community, where those affected by DANA are gradually recovering their mobility.

Despite this achievement, 2024 has been a challenging year, and 2025 poses even greater challenges. To meet the emissions targets set by Europe, it will be essential that 25% of registrations next year correspond to electric vehicles in our country. Otherwise, to avoid fines, the sector could face the difficult decision of stopping selling up to 175,000 combustion vehicles, which would weaken the national market and make it go backwards, with foreseeable negative consequences for employment, investments and competitiveness of the sector as a whole.

Tania Puche, communications director of GANVAM, highlighted that, “we closed 2024 surpassing the barrier of one million registrations in one year in Spain, a milestone that the sector had been waiting for since 2019 and that, in part, we have to attribute to the boost in demand. as a consequence of DANA. The month of December, which is always a favorable month for car purchases since brands and distributors make an extra effort to achieve commercial objectives, has performed better than expected and has exceeded 100,000 units, something that we did not see since June. Despite the good figures, we cannot lose sight of the fact that they are still far from the 1.2 million vehicles registered per year that correspond to our market by population level, motorization and per capita income. In this context, and especially in a year like 2025 that we have just launched marked by the CAFE regulations, it is vital to promote the rejuvenation of the park and with it, the decarbonization. In this sense, of course the extension of MOVES is positive, but it is necessary to launch a new direct aid scheme at the national level that improves the effectiveness of the current one.
