Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) marked a significant milestone in its road safety initiative as it concluded the second batch of its Safety Education Programme in Bangalore on Friday. The program, which aims to address India’s concerning road fatality statistics, has reached over 800,000 students nationwide since its inception in 2007.
Dr. Anil Kumar from the Bangalore traffic police department, who attended the event, emphasized the critical need for such initiatives, citing India’s troubling position as the country with the highest annual road crash fatalities globally. Current statistics show that over 150,000 deaths occur on Indian roads each year, with traffic injuries remaining the leading cause of death among individuals aged 5-29.
The program, operating under the theme “Road Safety – My Right, My Responsibility,” takes an innovative approach by targeting school children as primary ambassadors for road safety awareness. “By focusing on schoolchildren, we’re creating a ripple effect that extends to families and entire communities,” said Mr. Sudeep Dalvi, Chief Communication Officer at TKM.
Students participating in the Bangalore event showcased their understanding through various creative presentations, including skits, songs, and video demonstrations. The program has established Road Safety Clubs in participating schools, ensuring continuous engagement through peer-to-peer learning initiatives.
Following its success in Bangalore and Delhi, TKM plans to expand the program to Mumbai, with an event scheduled for February 11. The current phase aims to reach approximately 70,000 students and 600 teachers across 140 schools throughout India.
The initiative is part of TKM’s broader community development efforts, which have impacted over 2.3 million people since 2001. These efforts span various sectors including education, environment, skill development, and disaster management.
Toyota’s approach combines safe vehicle manufacturing with comprehensive user education and traffic environment improvements. The program provides structured training for teachers, enabling them to integrate road safety education into their regular curriculum.
As India continues to grapple with road safety challenges, initiatives like TSEP represent a crucial step toward reducing traffic fatalities. The program’s success in engaging young learners suggests a promising path forward in creating a more safety-conscious generation of road users.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions from students, teachers, and schools who have played key roles in promoting road safety awareness in their communities.
