Mahindra XUV700 races past 250,000 sales, last 50,000 units in six months

With Mahindra & Mahindra, which has sold a record 453,059 SUVs in the first 10 months of FY2025 and registered robust 20% YoY growth, it is not surprising that most of its leading models are posting individual milestones of their own. The XUV700 flagship model is the latest to do so, having driven past the 250,000 domestic sales mark at the end of January 2025 (see wholesales data table below).

Launched on August 14, 2021, the XUV700 has taken three-and-a-half years to achieve the new milestone. While the first 50,000 units were sold in 12 months, the 100,000 milestone came up 22 months after launch. The run from 100,000 to 200,000 units took 15 months, and the last 50,000 units have taken just six months, all pointing to the rapid pace of customer demand for this executive midsize SUV which has been on sale for 42 months.FY2025 will be the best fiscal yet for the XUV700. At 78,763 units sold in the first 10 months and a 17% share of M&M’s total SUV sales, the flagship SUV is likely to clock between 90,000 to 95,000 units in FY2025.

On the export front, a total of 8,844 units have been exported till end-January 2025, with 4,076 units in FY2024 being the highest for the fiscal yet. In the first 10 months of FY2025, the 3,183 units shipped overseas are down 11% on year-ago exports.

The XUV700 has led M&M’s new sharpened focus to be a leading player in its core business of SUVs and the results are evident. In August 2021, when the XUV700 was launched, the company had a 15% UV market share. Three years later and accompanied by some new models like the XUV 3XO, Thar Roxx, M&M currently has a 20% UV market share in an expanded SUV market which is teeming with rivals. And it has just launched the two new electric SUVs – the BE 6 and XEV 9e.

DIESEL XUV700 COMMANDS 75% SHARE OF FY2025 SALESOf the 78,763 XUV700s sold between April 2024 and January 2025, diesel variants accounted for 59,073 units or 75 percent.

Mahindra sells the XUV700 in both 5- and 7-seater configurations, and with a number of powertrain options. There are all of 46 variants, comprising 22 petrol and 24 diesel, on offer. The 2-litre turbocharged mStallion engine powers the petrol XUV700, producing 200hp and a meaty 380 Nm of torque. On the diesel front, the XUV700 is available with two different tunes for the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine – 155hp with 360 Nm of torque and 185hp with an impressive 420 Nm of torque.

Paired with the engines are two transmission options: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. The base-spec MX trim is only available with a 6-speed manual whilst all other variants offer a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission. Mahindra also offers the XUV700 with all-wheel-drive option for the AX7 and AX7L trims.

The XUV700 has a very wide price range, starting from Rs 17.23 lakh for the base 2.0P MX (5-seater) manual petrol through to Rs 32.35 lakh (on-road) for the 2.2D AX7 AT AW L diesel (7-seater). In this price range, it rivals both 5- and 7-seater SUVs such as the Tata Harrier and Safari, MG Hector Plus, and the Hyundai Alcazar.

Fuel-wise, demand for the diesel-powered XUV700 remains very strong. As per company data, of the 78,763 units sold in the April 2024-January 2025 period, diesel variants accounted for 59,073 units or 75% while petrol variants (19,690 units) made up the balance 25 percent (see fuel-wise split data for the first 10 months of FY2025 above).

WINNING START
That the XUV700 had the makings of a winner was apparent when online bookings opened on October 7, 2021 and 25,000 units were snapped up in a scant 57 minutes, reflecting up to six months of production for the company.

In March 2022, the Mahindra XUV700 drove away with the prestigious Autocar India Car of the Year 2022 title, having impressed the jury with its modern and tech-driven cabin, best-in-class engine options and lengthy features list. The XUV700 was also declared the winner of the ‘Value for Money Car of the Year’ and ‘Executive SUV of the Year’ awards.

FY2024, when the XUV700 saw sales of 79,398 units, up 19% YoY, was its best fiscal to date. It ranked second among 11 executive midsize SUVs, behind the leader, Mahindra Scorpio (141,462 units) last fiscal.

Now, with 78,763 XUV700s sold in the first 10 months of FY2025, up 19% YoY (April 2023-January 2024: 66,241 units), the XUV700’s sales in the current fiscal are only 635 units shy of the FY2024 total, and have already gone past the 80,000-unit mark in first-half February. This Mahindra model should likely clock 90,000 to 95,000 sales in FY2025.

XUV700 HELPS M&M DRIVE TOWARDS RECORD FY2025 SALES:  550,000 SUVs
India’s SUV market, with a record 2.52 million units in FY2024 (up 26% YoY), has been registering strong double-digit growth for over two years now and Mahindra & Mahindra, which has 12 SUVs (Bolero / Bolero Neo, Scorpio, Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, Thar / Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, XUV400 and XUV700, BE 6 and XEV 9e), is riding a wave of demand for most of its products.

In the first 10 months of FY2025, M&M has dispatched 453,019 units, up 20% YoY. While it has already surpassed FY2024’s 459,877 units in early February, it is now well set to achieve record fiscal sales of 550,000 SUVs.

With cumulative dispatches of 453,019 SUVs in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year (see data table above), M&M is well set to record its best-ever fiscal sales in FY2025, driving past its record sales of 459,877 units in FY2024 in February 2025 itself and marching up to an all-new high of around 550,000 units in FY2025.

In the first 10 months of FY2025, the XUV700 with 78,763 units has a 17% share of M&M’s total SUV dispatches, and takes third position after the Scorpio twins (137,311 units / 30% share) and the XUV 3XO (85,990 units / 19% share). The feature-packed cabin is big on the wow factor, thanks to the twin screens.

XUV700: TECH- AND FEATURE-LADEN, HIGH ON-SAFETY EXECUTIVE SUV
The interior, with its clean and modern design, is among the many draws of the XUV700. The dashboard is dominated by a dual 10.25-inch screen layout – one for the infotainment and the other for the instrument cluster – housed in a single, massive panel. The infotainment system uses the AdrenoX interface with in-built Amazon Alexa virtual assistant for carrying out a variety of voice commands.

The XUV700 also gets a host of other features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless charger, panoramic sunroof, auto booster headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery and dashboard inserts, an electronic parking brake, and a custom-built 12 speaker setup – including a subwoofer – with 3D surround sound that has been designed by Sony.

The ADAS-equipped XUV700 has 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, customisable voice alerts for speeding, and seatbelts with lap & retractor pre-tensioners.

The XUV700, which aced the Global NCAP crash test with a five-star rating (under the previous GNCAP protocol) in November 2021, bristles with plenty of safety tech, particularly the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). It includes Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – which warns you of a possible collision and if you don’t react, it uses Autonomous Emergency Brakes (AEB) to stop the car. Other features include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, smart pilot assist, traffic sign recognition and driver drowsiness detection. In addition, the XUV700 also comes with seven airbags, ABS with EBD, customisable voice alerts for speeding, and seatbelts with lap and retractor pre-tensioners for front seats.
