ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India on Wednesday said that 70% of its Hazira steel plant’s capacity in Gujarat, which is likely to reach 15.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2026-27, will be green steel as it prepares for the green steel transition, aligning with the steel ministry’s vision.

“The phase-1 expansion, which will increase the capacity to 15.6 mtpa by FY27, will require an investment of Rs 60,000 crore. 70% of the total steel production capacity (15.6 mtpa) will be three-star green rated,” said Ranjan Dhar, director and vice president for sales and marketing, AM/NS India.

In December last year, the steel ministry introduced a green steel classification that defined steel produced with emissions below 2.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of finished steel as green steel.

The government also introduced a star rating system, which categorised green steel based on emission levels. Under this system, five-star rated green steel has an emission intensity lower than 1.6 t-CO2e/tfs (carbon dioxide emissions per tonne of finished steel), four-star rated steel has an emission intensity between 1.6 and 2.0 t-CO2e/tfs and three-star rated green steel has an emission intensity between 2.0 and 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs.

Dhar said on the sidelines of an event in Delhi that In the wake of the US slapping 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, India should consider measures to protect its domestic steel industry.

“The domestic steel industry needs protectionism,” he said.

Last month, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) recommended a 12% provisional safeguard duty on certain steel products to check the flow of steel imports into the country.

Earlier this month, Steel Authority of India chairman also raised concerns over the possibility of steel getting diverted to different markets, including India, as the US and EU erect trade barriers.
